About Benefield Law
Michael Benefield was born in Beech Grove, Indiana, and grew up on the east side of Greenwood, Indiana. Michael graduated first in his class from Whiteland Community High School in 1991. Michael subsequently graduated with honors from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Michael started his career as a Process Engineer for The Dow Chemical Company, of Midland, Michigan, where he focused his work on plant design and process improvements for a variety of different chemical technologies. After working at Dow for five years, Michael decided to pursue a career in law, and attended the evening program at Indiana University’s McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis, Indiana. During law school, Michael worked full time as a Process Engineer for Eli Lilly and Company at an insulin manufacturing facility. Despite balancing the law school curriculum with a full time job, Michael graduated with honors from IU’s McKinney School of Law in May, 2004.
Early in Michael’s legal career, he had the privilege of working as the briefing attorney for the Honorable Charles Everingham, IV, United States Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of Texas, who at the time carried one of the heaviest patent case dockets in the country. In addition to working on Judge Everingham’s patent cases, Michael was also exposed to a wide variety of civil cases assigned to Judge Everingham, including cases involving employment disputes, business disputes, product defects, and serious personal injury. Michael’s experience as a briefing attorney provided him with a broad base of legal knowledge which he still uses today to advise and assist his clients.
Michael is licensed to practice law in both Indiana and Texas, and has been admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as in several federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.
Michael and his family live in Greenwood, Indiana, where Michael is a Den Leader in Cub Scout Pack 245.
